The New UCB Theater Harold Team Line-Ups For 2008

Thanks to Ben at the Improvoker blog for pointing out of this piece of information in his blog post “The UCB Theatre Announces New Harold Teams”

“The biggest news is the reshuffling of 1985 and the remaining members of fwänd into two separate groups – The Law Firm and Amazon Tusk. I think it also bears pointing out that UCB has granted one of our biggest requests of a mostly female group Sensual Ha, which from outward appearances looks pretty incredible. Sensual Ha also features Pat Baer, the longtime tech and dude in charge for keeping things running at the Theater. Returning faces of Eddie Dunn, Nate Lang, Brian Berrebbi, and the incomparable Jeff Hiller are a welcome addition back. Bastian and Decoster are the only two teams unaffected by the reshuffling.” – Ben Whitehouse, The Improvoker

The Kids in the Hall, one of my favorite all time sketch groups, are making a stop in New York City this weekend for their 2008 reunion tour! This is AWESOME news. The tickets are a bit pricey but I plan on attending Friday nights show.

In tribute to this event I will post a YouTube clip of one of my favorite sketches of theirs. “I’m crushing your head!” Tour Dates after the jump.

The Upright Citizens Brigade to serve up annual dose of mass rejection

Anthony King, the artistic director of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, announced today that the UCB will be holding their annual open-call Harold Team auditions for any student that has completed up through Level 401 in their training program.

As the theater continues to grow so does it’s popularity.  Every year auditioning has become much more competitive as upwards towards 300+ people will be trying out (don’t hold me to that… I’m guessing).

Will I be trying out?  Yes, I plan on it.  But if there’s one thing I’ve noticed in my time studying and performing improv for the past 2+ yrs in New York City it’s that the depth of talent is vast.  I could name upwards towards 50 people a lone that all very much deserve to make a theaters house team.  Improvisers here in New York are very determined and work very hard.  Alas, only 8 spots are available on a team.  It’s possible that 2 or 3 more will be placed on existing teams but that’s never a given.  I’d crap my pants just to get called back.

Remember to initiate hard!  “Yes and” the hell out of your scene partner.  Keep a good attitude and do not go into it with a desperate feeling.  All easier said than done of course.  To everyone in the New York City community, I wish you good luck!

The Man is a Mensch

I’m going to be completely honest when I confess my utmost fanboy/man-crush on Jon Stewart, I love the man and I love what he does, the Daily Show, his standup, etc. The man is a Mensch and he can honestly do no wrong, take for example when his wife was arrested, he didn’t make a big deal of it like having a hissy fit in the police station, or suing the police force, he did what any normal person was and picked up his wife at the station and only commented that “the cops were very nice and professional.”  So imagine my lack of surprise when it turns out that Jon Stewart has been ‘Quietly Visiting’ Ailing Iraq Soldiers, and he’s been doing it since 2004.  This only came out because Stewart was the center of USO-Metro awards dinner, where he received an award from Gen. James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The Office Returns April 10th

dwight! you so crazy

According to TV Guide, The Office will air its first post writers strike episode on Thursday, April 10th at 9pm.  I’m gitty behind my keyboard.  Does Jim still love Pam after all this writer striking!?  Will Dwight find a new girl friend?  Will they lose the Office because of Michaels crazy antics?  Will Ryan become C.E.O of Dunder Miflin?  I’m not being sarcastic here, I don’t watch LOST so this is the most drama I get from TV these days.  I mean I can relate to this show, I work in a real life office!

The Project comes to an end

project.jpg

The New York City improv scene wept quietly this past Sunday as The Project, a popular comepetitive improv show, came to an end at The Peoples Improv TheaterThe Project (created and hosted by Terry Jinn), in it’s own words is a longform improv comedy show where 3 teams out of a league of 8 perform on Sunday nights each vying for your vote.  The bottom 2 are eliminated at the end of the season to make way for two new teams!  The Project wasn’t always competitive but instead changed with the times for about 3.5 years.

I was lucky enough to become involved with the project in late 2006 / early 2007.  My team “Fiefdom” played for three seasons before getting eliminated.  The Project had incredible shows and amazing performers from all backgrounds.  I’m still semi new to the NYC comedy scene, so performing some of these shows especially early on was intimidating at first.  It was my first opportunity to be apart of shows that had people that I’ve watched and respected so much. It really gave me a chance to really grow (wow I sound corny now).

I think the roster of people involved speaks for itself.  I will list it after the jump.  It’s pretty amazing. Thanks again to Terry for running such a fun show and if you’re interested… check out the thread on the ImprovResourceCenter message board that takes a look back.

“I suppose I’m buy-curious. I have a big TV opportunity.”

If your as excited as Chris Camp and I am about the prospect of an Arrested Development Movie then it might be a small comfort to know that all three seasons are out now on iTunes, it’s quite tempting, if only I didn’t already own seasons 1 and 2 on DVD. But for anyone else, great deal if you don’t care about extras! Via

Arrested Development on iTunes

There’s always money in the banana stand!

I’ve mentioned on this podcast multiple times that Arrested Development may very well be my favorite sitcom of all time.  This coming from a guy that stood by Seinfeld for years and years and years.  Anyway, a friend of mine passed a long some news that Jason Bateman confirmed talks of filming a major motion picture of this amazing show.  This as reported on Yahoo! Entertainment.

While the prospect of this excites me greatly, I’m also a little bit nervous that a movie done “the wrong way” can ruin something that is already so great.  Maybe Arrested Development doesn’t NEED this.  Maybe it should just be left a lone to our own devices.  We can all have our own mini episodes playing in our head of what happens after that terrific series finale.

I really shouldn’t doubt Ron Howard and Mitch Hurwitz though.  Crossing fingers now.
