Plug-A-Podcast: Improvisors and their Podcasts

Well it’s obvious but Chris Camp and I are big fans of improv and comedy in general, Chris improvises with his groups Fiefdom and Dayjob, and I take classes when I have the chance. I’m also a big fan of podcasts if that isn’t obvious also, this is why I’m going to take the time to plug and link to two great podcasts for this first segment on Plug-A-Podcast:

The Flop House

This audio podcast is described “Free ranging, slightly inebriated conversation about bad movies, with a comedy focus. Hosted by Elliott Kalan, Dan McCoy, and Stuart Wellington” the connection to improv and comedy is that Elliott Kalan is a segment producer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and a freelance writer and comedian and Dan McCoy was a writer/ cast member for the stage talk show “Sara Schaefer is Obsessed With You” and trained in improv at The Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater.

With that background out of the way, I’d highly suggest this podcast. It took some time for it too grow on me, but i started laughing when one of the guys pitching Ziggy as a summer blockbuster movie and its most recent episode about the movie Bratz had me in hysterically laughing in tears, the episode was a surprise, but it was amazing, the guys were hysterical with their recollection of the movie, if you enjoy bad movies, or movie reviews in general, check out this podcast.

The Totally Rad Show

This is just one of my favorite video podcasts in general, they describe themselves as “…the summer blockbuster of geek news shows. Every week, hosts Alex Albrecht, Dan Trachtenberg, and Jeff Cannata rip into the world of movies, video games, tv, comics, and more and pull out what’s rad…” and that’s all true, I eagerly await a new episode each week and each one brings great moments of hilarity, my favorite moment has to be “Dan Becomes A Man,” which took place when the guys they were in england, I’ll link to it for your enjoyment now.

If none of this has convinced you yet, you have no soul.

The connection is made to improv and comedy by Jeff Cannata, who is one of the three co-hosts on the show, and while it was sort of hinted at a while ago, I finally have all the details and I found out that Jeff is part of the sketch comedy group “Very Angry Neighbors” and I have checked out some videos and they are very funny. Why not check out one with Jeff, in slow motion, find out what I mean by watching it.

Jeff is also in the long form improv group “The Returning Champs,” who are in the Los Angeles area and have performed around the LA area and will be performing at this year’s LA Comedy Fest on May 12th and 17th

  1. Thanks so much for your kind words about The Flop House. The Ziggy pitch got a surprising amount of attention online, but I’m glad to hear that folks are listening to (and enjoying) the longer episodes too, since that’s the real meat of the show. It’s been a while since I’ve done improv, but I miss it, and I’m honored to have my podcast mentioned here on The HaroldCast. I’ll be sure to stick a reciprocal link on our site. Thanks so much.
